[AW]  Stranger Things Did Happen Here

Daylight waned. Long shadows began to appear, lounging and stretching as they ravenously gorged upon the ground. The heavens were stained by vivid orange, cherry, and wine colors that faded into the dark welkin. There would be minimal clouds tonight, which meant no rain and a decent view of the moon. The pale orb could already be seen as the sky continued to darken. Fresh activity began to thrum within the marsh. The melodies of the night creatures began to emerge and her audits could hear the hums of bugs. They rose and cascaded in a unified chorus.

Steps were soft against the ground. She hardly made any noise as her paws pressed down on the grasses that faded into damp, muddy terrain. It felt like ages had passed since she had set paw in the Wash, an apt name for a place that was often overcome with water. Soggy paws hinted the area had even flooded recently. Undeterred she continued forward, and the grasses faded to mud and sand that clung to her toes where she stood at the bank of the river. Red eyes glowed as she stared across the water. The Blackwater forked further north. She could travel that way and only have to cross the river once- but that would take her in a nonsensical direction. Founder's Grover, her destination, was almost a straight shot across once she made it to the other side of the twin rivers.

So the stepped into the water. It was still chilly in early spring, cold from the melted mountain snow. She paused to lap up the cool refreshment. It felt icy and deliciously fresh as it slipped down her throat. She shivered with delight as she licked the sides of her maw, then plunged into the river with a gasp at the cold. The drink was nothing compared to the bite of the frigid water pressing her from all sides. It made her chest tighten and the water swept away her warmth instantly. The current pushed her further downstream, but she made it across the first with no issue. Soaked and dripping she hastily made her way toward the sister river without bothering to shake her luscious coat. There was no hesitation this time. She leaped into the river, steeling herself for the sharpness of the water. The second river was easier than the first. Daylight passed just as her paws graced the other side, enveloping her and the forest in comforting blackness.

"Your breath. Your fur. They smell of sugar." A voice paralleling to nothing but an oncoming downpour would enchant the atmosphere, its eyes painting a beautiful portrait of glowing ember and honeysuckle; a kiss beckoning those who looked onward into his churning pools. The female before him was a monstrous little being, yet oddly familiar as her image bounced around in his searching gaze. She was a hybrid of something that while clearly canine, resemble so much more. Atop her head were prongs of prey, upon her hind did tails lash to and fro, and though the male was never one to avoid eye contact, there was something more alluring about the fact she possessed no pupils. The brute began to think of all the occasions where he'd been graced by unique forms -- both male and female -- yet, there was pulling him closer to her -- etching every inch of her frame into a pocket in the back of his brain. He could sense the tension that radiated from the woman the nearer he drew, his tail hid behind his muscular chassis, a sign that he was no threat, but the ears that pushed forward on his head were erect in a sign of dominance. Odin was never afraid to fight, even if wounded.

As if a light had gone off behind his eyes, the man stopped in his tracks, finding a charming smile pulling to black lips as he let out a chuckle that rumbled within his chest. He recognized this strange molly; her features blending in with the night as though she were a snake in the grass... And in some ways, she certainly was. "... Venemtress? Is that you, you bugger?" He would step no further, waiting for her response before he followed through with anymore friendly conversation. He'd always had a problem with talking too much, too fast, but he had a feeling it was her, Ven had always had an appearance too rare to mistake. @Venemtress

She had just begun to toss her coat to and fro when she heard the footsteps. Her eyes were closed, but she knew by the sound that the creature was coming closer. Her vines began to rattle their warning seconds before she opened her illuminated eyes. Cherry orbs sought the newcomer in the dark. It did not take but a few seconds, for he was a beast of a creature. Tall, hefty, and with an alarming amount of fur for a wolf, she vaguely recognized him. He was not the same as she remembered; he had been skinnier and had sported a provocative hairstyle she had not seen anyone pull off since the last they had seen each other. This version was thicker thanks to pronounced muscles that rippled as he moved, and he had a wild mane which shrouded his neck to boot. But despite these changes, there was no mistaking Odin.

However, it seemed that she had not left quite the same impression upon him, as verbals questioned if she was who she was. Red eyes briefly narrowed in displeasure and she huffed irritably, partly because she was cold, but also because she detested the term "bugger". It made her sound like a lowly, pathetic, easily squash-able insect. She had not liked it when they were children, and she loathed it now. Her ears flattened and the rattles gave a final, harsh beat towards him before simmering.

"Of course it's me." she said coolly. She finished shaking out her fur, not caring if splatters landed on Odin at all. It would serve him right for comparing her to a dumb bug. Finished, her silky fur stood up in angular spikes, ruffled like her attitude. She blinked and looked at Odin, and felt a ping of guilt. It had been a long time. Maybe she was being too hard on him? She took a deep breath and said in a warmer tone, "It's good to see you, Odin. It's been a while. You're looking-" Freaking buff  "-fit."

There had always been something so sultry about the way she moved with the wind on her tails; a sassy smirk to those who looked down upon her and one laced with every more venom for those who dared smile. For Odin, he was at an advantage, and it wasn't simply because she'd never had a say so in wheather or not she wanted to gaze upward at the brute to meet his eyes. It was the mere fact that he knew exactly how to push her buttons, and with her, even the small ones were fun to play with. She sighed and squirmed about as his pet name, body lashing, sights full of heat, and all he did was flick an erected ear. "You haven't changed one bit, Ven, maybe a bit taller, but certainly just as hostile." And every word that fell from his grinning lips was laced in truth. Despite having known one another for so many years, the woman could never seem to wrap her mind around his speech -- specifically, his accent. No matter his word choice, if it wasn't plain English, she threw his sentences to the dogs. He hadn't called her a bug, no, but with every little wiggle she made as a reaction to it, she looked like one.

The male shook his head in laughter as her comment, feeling his face grow hot for a moment as he looked at himself. Was he really worthy of her compliments? He knew he was muscular, there was no doubting it, but hearing those words fall from her maw made him question even his own appearance. Venemtress wasn't one to throw herself around, but he knew she liked to tease him to the point where her sweet vocals sometimes sounded like screeching. Back when he was nothing but height and uncontrollably fluffy fur, she had a field day mocking him, and where he knew it was all in good fun (well, some of the time) he couldn't help but wonder why it was the first thing she noticed. Maybe she really was impressed, and to that, he gave a little flex to his biceps. "Hard work and heavy steel is all I know, born and raised on it. Decided to take a little break and go for a walk." He got another good look at her, head tilting to the side allowing for his right ear to flop gently. "Speaking of, what are you doing out here? Enjoying the night by your lonesome?" @Venemtress

He commented on her height and hostility. This caused her to roll her eyes a little. She was certainly feeling hostile. The meeting she had just had with Fallyn left her anger boiling. The icy water had helped cleanse away some of the resentment. Her mind seemed focused on the chill now, and a light shiver traveled through her. Bitterness still lingered in the back of her mind, but she tried to push it away. After all, Odin had not done anything to her. He had just happened upon her in a bitter and grumpy state.

The comment she made on his physique seemed to bring out his cheekiness, and she gave a little laugh when he flaunted and flexed in front of her. She was glad for the relief. After leaving Fal in such a horrible mood, she desperately needed something to brighten her spirits. But when he asked why she was out on her own, and her smile faded. She could feel her chest tighten from disappointment again as she thought about Fallyn, but the particulars to her feelings was not something she wanted to discuss with Odin. She was not a sharer.

"Actually, I just left your brother." she said, keeping her voice as level and indifferent as she could. "I had heard there was a meeting to take place soon... I was planning to attend." she remarked. "I assume you and your brother-" She would not dare say his name. "-will be there as well? He did not give much in the way of particulars... The only thing I know for certain is that Anaru is leading the meeting, and it's to take place in Founder's Grove." She of course knew more than she was letting on. Anaru had given an inspiring speech about rebuilding The Order when Vene had happened upon her traversing to spark interest in others who might be fellow minded. Sparked interest indeed. It had caused enough of a stir within her cross the continent to come back here and see if the visionary's ideas would come true.

Ven had always been an enthralling woman; not necessarily one to play hard-to-get, but certainly not one to give a man everything they wanted merely because they asked kindly. She delighted in watching those attempt to please her, savoured the emotions that rolled off the tongue of suitors she knew she'd give nothing to -- and at the end of the day she would sit with herself, a lonely mistress wallowing in her thoughts. Was it sad? Hum, not entirely. Ven knew she could get who she wanted, at least most of the time, just as Odin knew how to go about her; maybe he knew a bit too much considering their relationship was nothing more than friendly, some might dare say domineering... But he didn't think so. Venemtress was a tease, a lady of high class, and Odin understood just how to poke and pry at her to get the reaction he desired.

He didn't have to dance, no, hell, he didn't even compliment her, not yet, anyway. The young man threw his weight around, acting a fool for a minor second just to hear her chuckle and to see that delicate face pull into a soft grin. "You're telling me that pretty smile was hiding under all that attitude? I should have known." He let out a deep chuckle himself, gently brushing against her in an act of comfort. He didn't like seeing Ven appear out of sorts, there was a confusion in her eyes that made him want to ask questions he knew he had no business asking to begin with. For a moment it looked as though he might, but instead, she spoke over his hickory wood tone, causing him to fall silent and nod his head. "Fallyn, hum?" He spoke, watching her facial expressions fade in emotion before he made a quick assessment. He hadn't done it on purpose, but he wasn't blind despite his scratched eye. Her figure only tenser as the conversation went on, his own body craning over her in a protective stance up until the point she mentioned Anaru.

His head shot up, vision blinking quickly as he responded to her with another nod. "Ah, yes, she's going to be discussing important matters on The Order. She's only been training her whole life for this moment, it's a shame her brother up and vanished without even a word though. It just means she's going to need our support more than ever, and I'm entirely willing to do so." Voice gruff in a twang of irritation, he let his gaze reach out into the night, turning to look back at her with a kind smile and a wagging tail. The boy had missed his friend, and even if she didn't want to admit it, he had a feeling she'd missed him too. "You've gotta stop leaving, I run out of people to pick on when you do." He laughed, nudging her playfully with his shoulder a bit harder than he intended to. @Venemtress

He moved closer. She could feel the warmth of him, and it drew her in like a moth to the light. She gently rested herself against him and the warmth of his body eased into hers, slowly driving away the damp chill that had sunk through to her bones after the icy river swim. The touch was also reassuring, she had to admit. Her tension waned and she was tempted to close her eyes. He posed a question about his brother, but without elaborating. Her ears flicked back at Fallyn's name, but she made no other expression to answer him. Odin repositioned so that his frame protectively covered hers, and they remained silently together until she broke the quiet and inquired about the meeting.

Odin spoke of the upcoming conference with tones of seriousness and importance. She assumed he had been involved for a quite a while by the way he talked. Probably Fallyn too. She suddenly pictured Odin, Fallyn, and Anaru together, laughing and smiling. Taking care of each other. Working toward something for the greater good, while having each other to rely on. Jealousy rushed through her. She tried not to let that darkness show, and thankfully Odin was looking off into the woods and not at her face so she could compose herself.

When he said that Anaru would need their support, she noted how fully prepared he was to give it. Red eyes watching him turn into the hardy warrior he had been training to be. She wondered what it would be like to have someone so devoted to her the way Odin was toward Anaru.

"Well of course, Odin. It's absolutely serious. Having the Order again would change the world... We could make it better- the way it's supposed to be." she said seriously. But a moment later her face twitched into a mischievous smile. "But everyone knows you've been smitten with Anaru since we were all younglings." she taunted, her voice light and airy. "We all know you would do anything for her." He turned back to her then, smiling and wagging his tail. Her grin broadened in response.

He told her to stop leaving, and she was briefly reminded of the jealous image she had fabricated of him, Fallyn, and Anaru laughing together. She desperately wanted that. She needed to belong somewhere again. Her heart was ready to leap up and promise that she would never leave again. The words were on the tip of her tongue, tasting sweet and ripe- but it could not be done. She bit the temptation back, leaving her desires unspoken- for her skills lied in secrecy and deception. It was likely that her usefulness would take her away again, just as it had before. "But absence makes the heart grow fonder, Odin." she replied playfully, bouncing forward so that she might place a quick lick that may barely grazed his jaw before laughing and bounding back, hopefully before he could catch her.
