He arose when the first rays had touched the mountain's face, when the trill of songbirds called for their true love, and when the elk herd's bugle cries resonated as one. When the light split the rock and the trees stood sentinel against the backdrop that veiled their evergreens, when it slowly dragged its heat over the sleeping figure upon his slab of stone, smoothed over the years, and down the jagged pebbles deposited by glaciers that had since then gone extinct from Nidria; when warmth touched his golden features, mimicked by the colors of a rising sun, when his luminescence was only out-shown by the light of Thesan, did Arioch's ears flick and his head rise to fall away from the last dredges of a satisfied slumber of which may only dream of. The bison moved, and the earth shook underfoot, trembling the gathering of broken pieces of once known rock to scattered and fall, and he watched the beasts with interest, their low grunting rumble of a docile, dangerous nature, for they already knew where the quilled being was, one hoof stomping amidst the sway of the grass. Despite this gesture of respectful decline to him eating them, he could not help but gift a minuscule smirk which rose along his glowing lips, for today he was not here to gamble his life away with such magnificent creatures, no. But, there was one which he had watched countless times before manifest from the darkness when most of the sun had faded to a quiet sleep, black wings engulfing the night, the beating of ferocious wings naught of the graceful owl or the majestic eagle, but of a beast with blood-stained sclera and smirking beak.

Vulture, they would seek to call it. One who broke the bones of the dead to eat their marrow, the sound of shattering, splintering pieces echoing long into the day's afternoon when carrion had begun to rot but the meat still there for anyone's taking. He had observed coyotes, foxes, bears, beetles and flies carry off pieces of his wasted hunt, until it was a mock version of a deer, with legs strewn about and belly filled with maggots. Then the vultures had come, lappet and turkey, and though griffon had claimed the hide for their own, and Cinerous gallivanted with hoots and howls, none of these were as enigmatic as the Lammergeier of which he sought to claim as his, to own, to possess.  As if on cue, the bird he sought came when the heat had died down over the valley, the pounding of his beating wings announcing his arrive as he landed in the flesh riddled melting pot of carcass, his claws digging into what could only be described as the skin which peeled like parchment with ease from the body as the lappet-faced vultures clung to their scraps and the turkeys had already left for better meals. The griffons had their chunks, and the beast hissed with a challenge to the lone Cinerous who hopped away in response; the bearded one was not interested in the meat, however, and left such alone with its infestation of insects, instead digging through gleefully with a purpose until, uprooted, the frail limb of a leg sat limp but shining under the red, boiling meat.

The vulture was too preoccupied with his feast, his beak easily snapping the bone as one would the carapace of a crustacean, to rob it of its nutrients hidden in the dark substance of marrow that oozed out from the ivory. Arioch watched him, like a house cat would a small bird upon a branch, lengthy tail swishing along the broken slab of stone he lain upon until his feet tucked underneath him, front paws splaying their toes with mild anticipation. He would challenge the vulture from his stand, a snarl splitting the golden face of the man with bared fangs to acquire the attention of the one he sought.

Too focused on his meal, he did not notice the wolf until it had snarled, causing it to lurch and spin in one motion so that it faced the newcomer head on. The vulture's keen eyes glowered as they landed on the golden face of the wolf. Its long talons clutched and kneaded the ground as he held a crisp bone in his beak, unwilling to abandon it amidst the challenge of the far larger creature.

The vulture snapped up the remnants of the bone quickly, his russet and smoky colored  head bobbing as it slid back down the channel of his throat, almost entirely whole, and sank into his stomach. Once swallowed, the male bird continued to eye the wolf in silence, ruffling his dark feathers and lifting his wings to make himself appear larger and more intimidating than usual.

The beating of his heart lunged into his throat like the quickened tempo of a beating drum, the adrenaline trembling on the trigger of clenched lips that bore the glisten of white ivories to the winged creature. Arioch could not deny that the intimidating size alone of the Vulture was something to be admired, but the man did not seemingly want to just admire its beauty and strength, he wanted to possess it. Eager were his bones as they cracked beneath the burden of anticipation, the excitement like an overflowing river that coursed through his heated veins, and the figure was quick to slip from his place of rest and down the broken fragmentation of rocks that scattered from the weight of his motions, paws splaying and ears pressing back slick along his head with the patience of a huntsman poised with the calm leniency of one who played the waiting game. He had waited long enough for his prize to present itself with wings razed like colossal shadows to loom across the valley grasses, his own quills like a crown of thorns rising up from beyond his backside to curtain the glowing sun of a golden face with eyes of mismatched green peering out from beyond the brilliance as he rose towards the formidable scavenger with the lithe movement of a serpentine dancer; long tail draped behind him to veil the wake of his approach towards the creature, footsteps earnest to beckon the bone eater with an amused flick of a smile tempting the anger from out of the bird, teeth curling the curtain of his own jaws while the bloodied beak of the vulture lay an ever present smile.

It was then that Arioch lurched forward, the audible sound of quills snapping with the ferocious movements caught in the swallowing void of a rippling snarl that fell out from opened jaws as he rushed upon the Vulture, in turn closing the minimized space betwixt the duo just as he came upon his prey with the intentions to kill heavily embedded within his fervent gaze. The elk bugle called in the long distance beyond the palpable brew of unsettling atmosphere, the thundering of hooves gracing the valley with their presence as antlered silhouettes quaked with watchful, dark eyes the attentive audience, nay, the wary witnesses to two predator's who clashed fiercely with trilling beak and snarling teeth among the dance of the Summer grasses in the plentiful fields of Brisbane Valley. The fiery figure would come to meet the greeting opponent of his current obsessions, jerking his body straight into the Vulture's own towering frame with little remorse for the both of them as fur and feather melded as one amalgamation to be tossed over the side of the indiscernible carcass. Arioch fell into the natural instinct of his kind, head snapping around before he would lunge towards one of the outstretched wings of the Lammergeier in an attempt to lash out with his vice grip of canines upon the tender, delicate part of the bird, simultaneously grappling with the flailing beast to try and dig his spurs into him to keep his possession stationary from uprooting himself and taking to the skies overhead.

(Attempting to grab/bite down on the vulture's left wing while also wrapping his front legs about the bird's body to try and gouge/hold him with his spurs, and legs in general.)

Fangs met feathers and in the blink of an eye the vulture's wing was captured. The giant bird screeched and pulled back his wing, while at the same time thrusting his sharp beak forward to slash at the wolf's face.

Then, a blinding pain flashed through his body as he felt the piercing sting from one of the wolf's tines strike through one of his bony toes. The vulture struggled against the pin, but the wriggling made the pain worse. The vulture spread his wings, unwilling to continue the fight further and needing the freedom of the skies to take him away from this horrible creature. With a yank, the beast's foot was dragged free of the quill, but the injured digit dangled uselessly.

Giant flaps struck out and up, giving the bird height. Yet the wolf continued to berate him, and so the vulture struck out at the creature's face again, this time with his spread talons, aiming to rake them across the wolf's eyes but would settle for any piece of the foul predator who'd had no right to disturb him.

It was a futile attempt by the voracious bird too gullible in his hubris, and he inevitably fell short with his powerful, curved talons barely scratching the surface of a gilded face, while that of the inflamed quill-backed wolf's ego only grew in triumph, the taste of victory and avian blood staining his tongue and his golden maw. The struggle was met with bared teeth like a sword curved towards the vulture's neck, talon and canine clashing formidably upon their individualistic battlefield where they wore a crown and tried to swipe the other's from their head. Where the colossal beast of the skies failed, Arioch succeeded in ripping away at the feathers and the flesh of the predatory scavenger, wings of black curtaining about his features like a mantle backdrop to his illuminated fur that snaked and engulfed the claws clasped against his chest uselessly in the hushed breath of closed lips and the gust of volatile wings motioning for the desperation of lift. The lammergeier shrieked and the wolf snarled a rumbling thunder bellowing from between his jaws, parted with the blood he had taken from the fluttering creature.

The back of his throat itched with the need to pin the vulture beneath him, to make him fall to the earth with the other, lesser creatures who could not take to the Heavens, and breath the foul stench of his own defeat within the bird's face, to see how fear crept into his eyes and that odd sense of respect which Arioch desired more so than anything else. Thrusting his weight forwards, back legs planted themselves unconsciously to alleviate the balance where burden took place above, long articulate tail curling like a weight to keep him stationary as he fell forward at the vulture's face, jaws snapping with the tempting ire barely reaching that of his quarry's neck, kept at bay only by the thrust of wings that pounded like a war drum along the sides of his head. One weight fought against the other, laden jaws heavy with the pants of exhilaration filling the void of his instincts, and again did the gilded sunset and golden frame lunge for the Vulture, attempting to pry from him the oxygen that fell from screeching beak.

(Attempting to grasp the vulture's throat in his jaws and cut off his air supply for a minute; like, take the air from his lungs.)
